Named for Evelyne Bertrand, the head of the Hermès riding department, the bag was designed in 1978 to carry grooming equipment, with air holes punched in the side for ventilation, and was until fairly recently sold in stores alongside other Hermès equestrian goods. The casual, yet elegant styling and generous size also make it a Hermes Birkin 35CM bag for travelling with. Gradually it has been brought to the fore and is becoming ever more popular as a practical shoulder bag, where the understated style is particularly appreciated by stylish mothers with young children who need to keep their hands free.
